The voice is the oldest instrument. Before the drum, before the string, there was breath shaped into meaning.
I have spent much of my life in rooms where the voice is the whole event โ a story told into a dark, a narration laid over image, a single human presence carried through a microphone to someone listening alone.
What the voice carries
The voice carries more than words. It carries weather. It carries the room you recorded in, the hour, the mood you brought with you. A listener can hear all of it, even if they cannot name it.
This is why a perfect take can feel wrong, and a flawed one can feel true. The instrument is not separate from the person playing it.
A voice is a fingerprint made of air.
The discipline of listening
To use the voice well, you must first learn to listen โ to the room, to the silence between phrases, to the person on the other end who is not there yet is entirely there.
The work is not performance. It is presence, offered.
